Coaching Challenges...

Writer's picture: Jake LawrenceJake Lawrence

The best coaches are the ones that struggled for success. Nothing came easy. They chose to endure the process of failure, incompetence, and defeat in order to improve, become confident, and to achieve. They chose process over product. The best coaches overcame many obstacles. They got creative, found their personality along the way, and expressed their style while doing it. Good coaches know failure. Good coaches recognize effort, as well as timidity. The best coaches understand their athletes/clients and know when to impose challenges, and when to ease off expectations. A good coach recognizes when to pivot. They know when their ideals are not being met, and notice flaws in their messaging. The best coach will be patient yet persistent with their athletes. Knowing the human potential within, they may become frustrated with the pace of progress, but instead of showing frustration they will find new ways to motivate and create hunger in their athletes. The best coaches are born leaders. They are quick to recognize talent, surrounding themselves with associates, partners, and assistants to create a winning team. A good coach promotes a culture of success, knowing athletes that become part of the culture will develop a swagger. Confidence is earned. The process of trial and error, analysis and repetition, produces peak performers. Individuals do not move on, rather move forward in their lives. Knowledge is expressed when the student becomes the teacher. The teacher and the taught make the teaching. Removal from competition is part of the process. When the body is at rest, the mind’s tank is filled. The best coaches recognize that the ego must be quieted. The self must shift from a passion for winning to a passion for educating. The fire for competition is to be had by the athlete. How we do one thing, is how we do everything. The mind must transition from competitor to politician. This is mental work. Exercise is now for health instead of physical performance. Healthy exercise promotes a healthy mind. It is vital to understand the purpose of each element of your process. Why am I doing this? How many? How often? Compulsion must subside. Neurosis must subside. As a coach you must understand that your outcome is to develop your students to the best of your ability. You are not responsible for their success, only the elements of preparation. This is life. All is relationship. I cannot place a value on this role that I play. It cannot be bought or sold. I live for the day when the client will ask me: will you help me? The fear of the modern coach is felt in cancel culture. The emotion of personality. The presentation of image. The expression of attitude. The purpose is not to sell myself (as coach) to you, but to find common ground from which we can build. My definite chief aim is to be the best at what I do, to the people that I serve. I hope to serve as many people as I am intended to, without diminishing the quality of my coaching. My purpose is to elevate your mind, body, and soul via the modality of physical exercise, and personalized coaching. Your goals guide our friendship. My vision is your outcome. Together we experience the bliss of the teacher and the taught becoming the teaching.
