Coaching is Community

Note: The life experience is a collective. It is not about you more than it is about anyone else. What you live is a collective experience of the group/tribe/community. Thus, you provide as much as you can give while receiving what is given. This must be done without focusing on the self, without expectation of reciprocation or exchange. Sometimes you will certainly "get" more than you "give." Therefore, you must give thanks, and express appreciation, with sincere humility.

The Exchange: Those who hold you accountable do so because they care. It is a responsibility, and sometimes a burden, they've chosen to shoulder. Reflect on situations or relationships where you have taken on this role. It feels amazing to be given that amount of trust. When we are acknowledged by the recipient for our role in their achievement or completion it is always a heart-warming surprise, never to be expected.

The Truth: Our society does a great job assisting and shouldering the burden of our youth. We cheer, devote, encourage, console, celebrate, and grieve with them. We love them; in success or failure, win or lose. Thus, as adults, we must turn to coaches. Those individuals that dedicate their lives to the life experience of mature society. A good coach reminds you of your potential. He listens to what is said as well as what is not said. He wants to see you live each moment with a can-do attitude, aiming all actions aggressively at your desired outcome. He holds you accountable to goals and deadlines when necessary and removes pressure when it is not. His most powerful questions are why and how. The coach-client relationship is unique in that it is chosen, and then persisted in, to succeed in rising to our potential.
